I think the Fan Interference call on Mookie’s Play was Correct

League Championship Series - Boston Red Sox v Houston Astros - Game FourIt’s clear from the video that Mookie Betts was in a position to make the catch, and that the fan obstructed his glove as he was reaching for the ball. The only issue is whether the fan reached into the field of play to interfere, or if Betts reached beyond the wall. He is allowed to reach into the stands, but does so at his own risk, and it would not be considered fan interference. Take another look at those fans… they are up against the wall leaning and reaching forward. Betts is short of the wall, reaching out and up. Here’s the replay to watch:

Look at that slow motion… Betts travels quite a way in the air before striking the fence after the fan makes contact with his glove. It’s still pretty hard to tell for sure, since the fence camera angle was obstructed. A commenter on Deadspin took a crack at breaking it down a little more. TVs_Frank writes:

“The key to tell where the fan’s hands are is that crease in the orange padding. Right before it is where the collision happens, although not exactly since it’s not a straight ahead shot, but it’s only off by a bit.

If we go to roughly the same frame in the other angle we can use that crease to tell roughly where the fan’s hands are coming from and put a line there to represent the wall.

Not a foolproof method, but the fan’s hands are probably at least a couple inches over the wall.”

He makes a good point. Now go back again and watch the slow motion replay, to see where Betts is well off the wall when the fan hits his glove. We don’t have a definitive camera angle, but the person in the best position was actually Joe West, who made the call. He was umpire stationed down the right field line, and had a good look at the play from that vantage point. For what it’s worth, he says he clearly saw the fan’s arm over the playing field.

Now go back and watch the game-saving catch by Andrew Benintendi over and over again… wow!

Golden Home Run: I may never miss Sunday Night Baseball from now on

Holy cow! What a baseball game last night!

Now there’s a debate about what to call a walk off grand slam home run in the 9th inning down to your last out, and your last strike, while losing 3-0. I’m going to dub it the “Backyard Dream” homer. Man, that was fun to watch.

And a week ago, it was just as exciting… I had to stay up until nearly 1 a.m., but I go to see the Red Sox come back in the 9th and walk off in the 10th, thanks to Andrew Benintendi:

Yay, baseball… when it’s good, it’s the best. Going to take my kid to see a game tonight- we’ve only got the single A Fort Myers Miracle in town, but they have been putting on a show, and are playing the #1 Charlotte Stone Crabs, featuring #4 overall pick and two-way player Brendan McKay.

In case you missed it, here’s that Backyard Dream walk off grand slam home run by David Bote- a rookie!

Oh, and he got to meet Bill Murray, who was sitting in the front row!

Poor Marlins Fans

2 years ago, the Miami Marlins had a young exciting roster with some real things to look forward to… now that’s all gone. The traded Marcell Ozuna yesterday, which is crazy, because not only was he good, he was an All-Star at a bargain price (they only paid 3.5 million last year.) Now they’ve got Yelich, and Bour, and… uh… is Ichiro still playing? It’s so sad. The traded the reigning MVP Stanton for a couple of minor prospects and an old second baseman to replace the most exciting player on the roster in Dee Gordon.

I understand the new owners are broke, because they had to finance their purchase of the team, so I understand why they wanted to move Stanton’s contract, but they didn’t get a great return. Jeter didn’t even show his face to explain it… Now they’ve traded 3 stars- young, fun, exciting players, so nobody is going to want to go see them.  This teardown rivals the post-championship teardowns… without a good season as a trade-off. Oh, by the way, they also fired, then botched the rehire of all-time great special advisers like Tony Perez, Andre Dawson, Jack McKeon, and Mr. Marlin, Jeff Conine. It’s like they want people to dislike them.

We went to a game this season where we wen to the Clevelander club located in the leftfield stands. That was cool… and at one point Ozuna started dancing to the music coming from the club- very cool. Also, he put on a show at the Home Run Derby. He’s gone, and all the life of the club with him. I’ll probably be back, but only to see my Reds in town. The Marlins had a poster day, and my kid got one, and hung it on his wall, and now half the players on it are gone. I’m not particularly a Marlins fan, and this is a reminder not to be one.

Scot Schebler Knocked a Ball All the Way Out of Great American Ballpark

What a way to join the team. In his first game since being called back to the big leagues, he crushed a walk-off 3-run homer to beat the Cards in the bottom of the ninth. There was no doubt about whether it had the distance from the moment it left his bat, though it just snuck fair inside the right foul pole. The ball bounced once near the Bowtie bar, and right on out of the stadium. We will miss Jay Bruce, to be sure, but this guy could be an up and comer to pair with Adam Duvall for a few years!

Pete Rose’s Ban Will Still Not be Lifted

pete rose

Very Bad Person Pete Rose

The NY Times just reported that Commissioner Rob Manfred has denied Pete Rose’s third appeal for reinstatement. Baseball’s all-time hit king will still not be allowed to participate in MLB activities, nor be allowed entry into the Hall of Fame. The ban was entered in 1989- so that’s about 26 years since Charlie Hustle has been barred from the sport.

In other news, it appears Alex Rodriguez will return for another season. A Rod has been caught actually cheating with performance enhancing substances on multiple occasions.

I am Bald Joey Votto’s Rage Face

Holy crap, Votter was PISSED last night! Here’s a screencap of his argument, after he got tossed for complaining about not getting a requested timeout.

Angry Joey Votto

Angry Joey Votto

Do not mess with Joey Votto. Think he’s cruising for the end fo the season.. no sir! love this guy!

via Deadspin.

UPDATE: Watching the video just now, I’m not sure what Votto did to get ejected. He turns away toward his own dugout when Umpire Welke ejects him. Seems kind of rash.

Also, it was Bryan Price that said he thought Votto was upset by not getting the timeout (which isn’t visible on the video)
